"It's only cheating if you lie about it."
So, I was reading this month's issue of Cosmo (shut up. At least my guilty pleasure isn't illegal & doesn't cause cancer :P ). They feature the results of a mini-survey which asked if kissing counted as cheating. 84% of women & 69% of men said yes, 16% & 18% respectively said no. The thing that disturbs me is that these people were willing to make a yes/no decision with that little information. ::shrugs:: Maybe I'm the only one who'd need qualifiers to answer that one, but I do. I guess I just have a much looser definition of "cheating" than your average Cosmo reader. In my world "cheating" is something that's defined anew with each different relationship, & possibly re-defined at different points in the same relationship. In the relationship I'm in now, yes, kissing would probably be considered cheating (though not, I suspect, a deal-breaker level of cheating). In my last relationship, sweaty monkey sex wasn't considered cheating. The way I see it, cheating is about betrayal, & what exactly constitutes betrayal is incredibly subjective. Hence the huge need for honest communication in a relationship. Which, I suppose, is why so many people rely on prefab unchanging lists of what is & is not cheating. Dogma is usually the easiest way out of almost any situation. Give a Clix, if you please. |
